    Yo Update Sept. 2009

    Dear Friends,
Greetings from the south where it is 85+ degrees! I am sure most of you are enjoying
much cooler temperatures where you are!
Well the big trip to Mexico City is now history and yes it was a interesting trip! We left
on a Wednesday morning and arrived Thursday evening. We did not have any major problems
traveling there and back. Two minor things that happened was that the tail pipe broke
on the van and some people got a little car sick one morning when we were driving in the
mountains. Other than that traveling was uneventful.                                                                                              While there Mexico City a large part of
the time was spent in a huge park in the middle of the city. Many of the things I will mention
were in this park. One day we went to the zoo which was a first for all the boys I think. They
really enjoyed looking at all the different animals and birds. Another day we went to the Museum
of Anthropology. This was interesting for us older ones but the boys got kinda bored
so they got to wait outside on a bench while we finished walking through the museum. The
boys also enjoyed going to the amusement park. They road bumper cars like maybe 20
times! Some of the group toured an old castle turned into a history museum. The boys also
really enjoyed going on pedal boats on the lake in the park. Some of us had the privilege of
going up the tallest building in Mexico and getting a birds eye view of the city. We also
toured the central plaza where there were government buildings and a old historic church.
We hired a guide to tell us the interesting facts about the place. After that we went to an
area where some old ruins had been found right in the middle of the city. Then we went
through another museum dedicated to those ruins. One evening we also enjoyed watching
a pro soccer game in the rain! Ok the game was fun, but the rain wasn't so exciting! Also
some of the group went outside the city to some ancient temple ruins. An IMAX theater and
planetarium was also enjoyed by all. We went to a museum that was like all hands on stuff
and the boys really enjoyed that. One morning some of us went to a technology museum.
Then in the evening we all went bowling. I may have missed some things but that should
give you a feel for what we did while we were there.
While we were there we traveled around by metro which was primarily the subway.
This was definitely a new experience for the boys. Another first for them was seeing a pop
machine. You know like hey he put money in that and look it made him a coke!:) Wow it
    even gave him change back!
Escalators were a first too! Some had trouble deciding how to get on and off. Another thing
they would do is sit in the motel at the window and look at all the cars going by in the street.
I am sure the boys will not forget this trip for a very long time!
This month we also started harvesting some sesame seed. That is we started cutting
it so it can dry before we remove the seeds. So that will be keeping us busy for the next
    while.
Also this past month two new girls have come to the orphanage. They seem to be
adjusting well to life here. And last month we also got a few day old baby! So those taking
care of the girls are staying busy!
Also for those that may not have heard about Mom's situation since the last update
here is the latest. The lump was removed and the tissue that was around it is cancer free!
PTL for his faithfulness! THANKS to all of you who were praying for her and us as a family.
May the Lord get all the glory!
So may the Lord bless each of you as you serve Him. May you also be blessed by
sharing in my life whether through prayer, with money, cards, email or whatever.

    Sincerely in Christ,

    Johan

Well folks another month has come and gone and I trust your summer is going well. As to be expected it is rather hot here. This year the rains seem to be further and farther between. Last year was wetter than normal the natives say so I guess we will see what this year holds. A lot of nights it looks like its going to rain but it doesn't. Usually though it cools down so sleeping is pretty comfortable. Yea you still need a fan but you don't have to roll over to let that side dry off from the sweat!

Along with the rains come bugs of every size and shape. All created for the purpose of annoying mankind! Ok well maybe thats not the only purpose they were created. Bugs can be found about everywhere. In the fridge, in the shower, in the toilet, in the beds, in the clothing, in the food, in your nose, eyes, and mouth to name a few! You know those things we call gnats at home they are like twice as bad here as they ever are at home! I am just glad we don't have the biting type here like they do in some areas around here! The other night I took some pics and video clip of the wall beside our porch light. It was covered with hundreds of moths of different sizes and shapes. You would think that with all these bugs there would be plenty of birds but such is not the case. Then again thats probably why there are so many bugs. Well I guess I will leave the bugs alone for now.

The boys have been helping the neighbor again this year in planting sesame seed. They are almost done and will probably finish this week. Then we will need to keep the weeds down and poison ant hills so the ants don't destroy the crop. This year I think we are going to give each of the boys a section of the field that is theirs to take care of. That way if they don't want to do the work, well then they don't get as much profit either. I never knew work to be so complicated but now I think I might know how my parents felt sometimes.

I would like to share a prayer from a devotional book I am using right now......Dear Lord, You expect your children to be disciplined and diligent. You have told us that the fields are ripe and the workers few. Lead me to your fields, Lord, and make me a disciplined worker in the service of Your Son. Amen.

    Sincerely In Christ,

    Johan

  • Yo Update May/June 09

    http-equiv="CONTENT-TYPE" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"> name="GENERATOR" content="OpenOffice.org 2.4 (Win32)"> http-equiv="CONTENT-TYPE" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"> name="GENERATOR" content="OpenOffice.org 2.4 (Win32)">

    Dear Friends,

Well friends it has been awhile since I did this because I missed last months update. Not exactly sure why but it happened so here is your May/June update.

Wow time is flying! In May, I was here 1 year already! In some ways its like WHOA where did time go! I am having a hard time remembering some highlights from May because it was so long ago! One thing we did with the boys again this year was pick patillas (pa-tie-yahs). A cactus fruit that grows wild around here. Scott, Sam, and I took turns taking the boys out in the mornings to pick. Some days between 4-6 boys would pick 6-9 dozen patillas. We then stick them in the fridge or freezer and later that day we have a delicious cold snack. As I write this the season is almost over so we are enjoying the last of them for this year.

Another thing we did in May was drill some more wells. I helped with one for the neighbors and another one was done in a village about 10 minutes from here. So far things have gone really well. PTL no one has been seriously injured so far as it is a fairly risky job.

June was started off by a visit home to get the younger brother Travis married off. Went out to Indiana a few days before the wedding to help with setup and other stuff. It was great to see a lot of people I hadn't seen for awhile at the wedding. After the wedding I traveled home with the family and spent about a week at home in Pa. I enjoyed hanging out with my family, playing softball and volleyball with friends, and even mowing grass. Another highlight was reconnecting with my church family. Helped with a work day at church where we painted and put up a church sign and other various things. To all those at New Hope thank you for your prayers and financial support as I serve here.

Recently we have been clearing and burning in preparation for planting sesame seed. We have had three substantial rains so far and the neighbor that helps us is coming soon to help us start planting. The other night we did some more burning which is a highlight for the boys as you can imagine. Something about guys and fire, there must be some kind of attraction for it built in.

Life here has been going well as I live with and relate to the boys. At times things go wrong and I am challenged to be an example by how I respond. As I live here I am reminded time and again to be thankful for all the blessings I have in a godly family. I hope and pray that as I live my life God would use me to minister to the children here. So thanks for all your prayers and encouragement. God bless!

    Johan
